Murtaugh list March 31, 2009

Ted Mosby of How I Met Your Mother had a list of things he was too old to do. He called it a Murtaugh list. This was based on the character of Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon play by Danny Glover.

Ted was in his 30s in the TV show and he said that he was too old to play laser tag, drink like there’s no tomorrow and have an all nighter among many things. It got me into thinking that I have my own Murtaugh list but just very few. Maybe in a few years I end up adding to this list.

1. I can’t have an all nighter. I either wake up sick the next day or I’d be utterly sluggish I’d just lay in bed the entire day.

2. I used to be able to thrive on 6 hours of sleep and even do papers with just a couple of hours of shut eye but now I have to get 8 hours of sleep. I can still sleep for less than 8 hours but productivity slumps unlike before.

3. I can’t eat the same amount of food as before and not feel sick. I can gorge on anything before and not feel the effects but recently I feel the effect of eating fatty foods and junk food.

4. I can’t watch TV all day or read all day. My eyes hurt and I get terrible headache.

That’s all I can think about. Despite being too old to do these things, I still do it. So I end up with a headache, an expanding waistline and dark circles aroung my eyes.

I think am not too old to play at Timezone, watch Disney Channel, walk barefoot around the house, or throw a tantrum. There are still a lot of things I can do that people younger than me are doing. However, the fact that I am writing about this and thinking about it shows I am older.

Calvin and Hobbes ending and the future March 12, 2009

I really like Calvin and Hobbes. It never fails to crack me up because I find his adventures really interesting. Some part of me wishes I had that kind of childhood but mine was more fun.  I did play like a real Power Ranger or a real movie star. Bata pa lang ilusyonado na.

So discovering Calvin and Hobbes during law school, yes that late, was really a sort of throwback to my childhood. I would read it to make me laugh and even if I have read the series in hand a number of times, it still never fails to utterly amuse me.

Sometime ago I came across the ending of the series. I know the Bill Watterson stopped making the comic strip but I did not know that he made an ending. When I saw it, my heart broke. My goodness me, they made him take pills and Hobbes just became a lifeless stuffed tiger.

Then I came across this compilation of the many versions of the future Calvins and Hobbeses. Awesome. Thanks to Jason Kottke, yet again. I love Calvin and Hobbes. The asshole who made the sad ending should be tortured and shot. Thanks to whoever made this addition to the sad ending.

Music and Nick and Norah’s Infinite playlist February 10, 2009

I love music. So it is not a surprise that I liked Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. I am a sucker for good music and watching a movie with a great soundtrack is just pure bliss.

The story of the movie is the usual teen love. I guess the music saved the movie for me.

I am also quite excited that Eminem is coming out with  new album. I did have all his albums before but decided to delete all of it a few months back because it was just too many that it was useless for me to shuffle my playlist as his songs would be played at least once for every five songs. I think that was a mistake. Big mistake. Now I have to find a way to get the music again.

Michael Jackson’s video February 8, 2009

On the way to school this morning, the bus I rode on was playing a concert of Michael Jackson. This was Michael Jackson before this nose disappeared but after the Gluta treatment.

I just found it funny that the concert showed both his dancing and performance skills as well as the many people who passed out in his concert. The shots were either of Michael Jackson singing and dancing or of his fans passing out and being carried in stretchers or being slapped by paramedics to test if they are conscious. I do not know what the producers of the video were trying to convey, but I just found the juxtaposition weird.  Showing Michael Jackson dancing – with his weird “costume” that looks like something a lady gymnast would wear, only he puts on pants underneath it, – and his many unconscious fans in alternating shots was really weird.

Slumdog Millionaire January 24, 2009

There has been quite a hype about this movie. And I waited until I had time to watch and savor it but it fell flat. I did not get the movie. So the guy’s in Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and uses that to get in touch with the love of his life. In the process of being interrogated for his success, he ends up sharing his life story. And? Not much going on in there.

I just did not get the movie. Maybe watching it after I watched Revolutionary Road last night was a bad idea, or maybe this is just not my cup of tea, or chai.

I think this movie is the same as the Big Fat Greek Wedding. The Big Fat Greek Wedding was a hit because having such a large, noisy family is not just a common thing for those watching it, especially Americans. This movie sells to western people cos they do not have slums and have not seen poverty like this one. For someone who sees poverty, just like the one presented in Slumdog Millionaire, on a daily basis, there was nothing that made the movie special. Since I am not a film major and cannot judge a movie’s cinematography and direction and what-not, I usually base my judgment of a movie on the skills of the actors, the music used and the story. Though I think it was well acted, and the movie did have a good musical score, there was nothing in the story that excited me. The love story did not even feel well presented.

But just for one to be a part of the bandwagon, watch it. But for me, I’ll live if I had not watched it. It doesn’t make my list of great movies.

And I still cannot believe Revolutionary Road did not get the nominations it deserves.

I hate great movies, especially the ones where I end up teary-eyed and enjoying it – teary-eyed is an utter understatement. I just finished watching Revolutionary Road, and that is how I am right now, teary-eyed. Kate and Leo should have gotten an Academy Award nomination for their performances. I am no film critic, it’s either I like it or not, either it catches my attention or not, either it is interesting or not. This was something I liked, attentively watched, and was quite interesting. I will leave it at that.

I just love depressing movies, they make me feel better.

Korean song syndrome December 3, 2008

I usually enjoy having a song in my head and just letting it play on. It may be a One Reoublic song, or the chanting of the barker at the jeepney terminal – yes, the barker’s chant turns into a song in my head.

On my way to school today, the song I had in my head is some Korean hip-hop (or so they claim) boy group. It just played and played and played. The song was obviously in a language I do not understand, which annoyed me. So I ended up googling it and looking for a way to get to hear the song even though Youtube and Imeem is blocked in the office computer. Found one. Now having my fix of this Big Bang song – I think it is entitled Sunset Glow.

I should stop listening to what my cousins are listening to. Haha. I just hate it that I am enjoying this music.

Since the new season just wrapped up, I just thought of taking this quiz. Haha

Which Entourage Character Are You?

You are Eric. You are the executive, the suit. You know what the grand strategy is, you understand what is needed of you, and you execute. Most people tend to underestimate you, but you deliver quite a surprise. Your hard work and natural abilities provide you with the confidence to step up to the plate when it is required of you. Although you aren’t the All-Star of the group, you are the Manager entrusted with confidently calling the shots.

Hopefully the next season starts soon. Can’t wait for it. Haha.

E is my favorite character, so this was fun. I did not need to retake it to get the result I wanted.

Based DAW on some cartoon show. I am excited to see it nonetheless. Well, the trailer is good, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it really is good.
